San Francisco, CA 94105
Opening Reception: November 4, 2004 6-8pm
Lisa Dent Gallery presents the beautiful, enigmatic and innovative works of Flo
McGarrell. McGarrell combines expertise in textiles and imaging technology to turn
virtual models into inflatable installation spaces and pliable sculptural objects. These
objects blur the line between fantasy and reality by literally reshaping our environmental
expectations. Whether larger than life or smaller in scale, McGarrell’s sculptures are
designed to make viewers intimately aware of their bodies and of the way those bodies
function in space. Documentation also plays a critical role at every stage of this artist’s
work. A dedicated videographer and researcher, McGarrell will display sketches, sewing
patterns and source material alongside finished pieces.
Flo McGarrell’s career has been marked by excellence in a variety of artistic media. In
1997 McGarrell graduated from Maryland Institute College of Art with a B.F.A. in fiber
and extensive coursework in photography, video and metal fabrication. McGarrell also
received an M.A. from the Maryland Institute in 1998, and an M.F.A. from The School of
the Art Institute of Chicago in June of 2004.
